Today's Basic Idea:" houses "

Don't freak out, but check out this townhouse in a (nice) neighborhood in Baltimore. Now class, let's compare and contrast with how much this house might go for in say, Washington DC or Portland, Oregon or NY or San Francisco.

It's top of the line, $700k. Steep for most of us, but look at it. We can all dream of a townhouse like this... in Portland, it would be probably about 2 million for something like this on the Willamette. Look at this one next. How much would that go for in DC? Easily 900k, I think. And in Baltimore, it's 200k. A townhouse in Fells Point - on the harbor, walking distance to everything. Here's another one in swanky Federal Hill for the same price range: And lastly there's this one, in the SAME ZIP CODE as Fells Point! Just to show how freakishly cheap some neighborhoods are... they must have lead pipes or mold in the walls or dead bodies strewn about the living room: This one's 32k. That's 32,000. how on earth can anything be that cheap? And you know what's scary? If I did the "teacher next door" program, I'd only pay half that. Weird. So, even though Baltimore is only an hour's commute (by MARC train) from DC, it's much, much cheaper. I can't figure out why... they (like Portland) have lightrail, as well as subway AND commuter rail. (Wacky... I guess they love trains.) So yeah, now we're looking at Baltimore, too.
